About Us

SSM seeks to better preserve, present and promote the outstanding national heritage found in the greater Morija-Matsieng area (Makhoarane) in order to enhance community identity, education and capacity building, as well as livelihoods in the area. This heritage comes in many forms: built environment and heritage sites; archival and museum collections; living culture, performance and orature; and the creative economy.

SSM is the outgrowth of an initiative by local heritage institutions – Morija Museum & Archives, and the Royal Archives & Museum (Matsieng) – together with various stakeholders from Morija, Phahameng, Makeneng and Matsieng, to build a larger framework of collaboration based upon a long legacy of interventions by these heritage institutions and other local actors in terms of heritage management, public education programs, artistic events and performances, as well as scholarly research. That process began in 2016, leading to formal registration in 2020.
